Press Release

5 North Americans Travel to India to Receive "Liberation"

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
VAUGHAN, ONTARIO, August 11, 2010

For multiple sclerosis patients facing ever-worsening neurological problems, Liberation treatment offers a ray of hope. Mostly unavailable in North America, individuals seeking the treatment are forced to leave the country. On Sunday, August 22, 5 Americans and Canadians travel to India where they will receive the treatment to open blocked veins in their neck, using a process similar to one used for the treatment of angioplasty in heart patients.

Its an unproven treatment in MS patients but one that Dr. Zamboni, the Italian doctor who pioneered the treatment, has theorized will provide welcome relief for many of the debilitating symptoms of the disease. Andrea White, an early recipient of the treatment, felt Liberation treatment was the right choice for her now. As the disease progresses, you wont regain what youve lost. Im not looking at it as a cure. Its a hope to slow the progression of the disease.

While results vary for each patient, members of the group are hopeful that the one hour treatment will make a difference and offer them a better quality of life. Betty-June Schlitter, a 54 year-old mother of three, finds that her MS greatly impacts her balance and ability to work. Diagnosed 18 months ago with RRMS (Relapsing-Remitting MS), Schlitter suspects the disease was undiagnosed for a while. Her hopes for the treatment? I love spending time with my grandchildren however MS has on occasion impacted my ability to do that. I hope the Liberation treatment I am receiving will greatly improve my quality of life.

Schlitter and the other MS patients who have received the Liberation Treatment, worked with Liberation Gateway to arrange their treatment in India. Founded earlier this year, the Waterloo,ON-based company recruited a top specialist in India to provide treatment for their clients. Lou Dietrich, founder of Liberation Gateway, recruited Dr. Pramod Kumar, a top specialist in his field, and arranged for him to meet at length in Poland with Dr. Marian Simka, a pioneer in the Liberation Treatment. The two collaborated and consulted on best practices regarding imaging, stenting and the CCSVI procedure. The process took a while, Dietrich said, because we had to ensure our patients would receive safe and effective treatment in a quality setting. I reviewed everything as if I was the one receiving treatment.

Jerry Rodrigues of VAUGHAN, ON will be traveling as part of the group of 5 heading to India for a week on August 22. Rodrigues, the 37 year-old former Director of Catering at Hockley Valley Resort (Ski and Golf Resort), has been diagnosed with MS in February, 2010. That news was enough to knock the breath out of me. I knew things were not normal with my body, but I had hoped it was just me getting older and the exhaustion and stress I put on my body. With further testing, Rodrigues was informed that he has Primary Progressive MS, the most aggressive form. Each day seeing myself deteriorate and think - oh my god, I actuallycould be in a wheelchair by my 40th birthday. Active in muay-thai and a dedicated gym goer, Rodrigues fights to continue working out each day; however the MS forced him to give up his catering career. My career had to come to an end because my legs would not support the hours required to be on your feet. 20 years in this industry and MS put an end to my career, now leaving me with no choice but to analyze what my future may hold. Walking comes with great pain, coordination issues and balance that I still believe is only as good as it is because of my core strength. When asked what he hopes the treatment will bring, Rodrigues said, I hope that walking 3 blocks again will be something that I look forward to and not dread on how many times I may need to stop. My biggest frustration comes from not getting [this treatment] in my own country.
